The authors of two recent books on the place and future of literature in our society will discuss and debate their work. Garber's The Use and Abuse of Literature argues passionately for what literature is and isn't, drawing a solid line in the sand. She is a p[rofessor of visual and environmental stdies at Harvard. Shields's Reality Hunger is a manifesto for an exploding of the lines between fiction and nonfiction, between memoir and novel, and an expansion of the kinds of structures a literary writer might use. He is a professor of English at the University of Washington. Mary Ann Gwinn, Seattle Times book editor and vice president of the board of the National Book Critics Circle, will moderate.
