Coming Up Next Week: NBCC General Membership Meeting March 14, 10 a.m.

by Admin | Mar-08-2019

Reminder: This year's annual general NBCC membership meeting will be held on Thursday, March 14, at 10 a.m. at the New School in Manhattan (Room I-202 in the Theresa Lang Center, 55 West 13th Street, 2nd floor). Coffee and bagels will be provided.

Immediately following the meeting, we will host a panel discussion, led by board member Carlin Romano, on the topic "The Stephen King Solution: Could It Work Elsewhere?” (The title refers to the social media efforts of influencers like King in restoring book reviews to small city papers that are about to axe all reviews.) Panelists include NBCC VP/Online Jane Ciabattari, a columnist for BBC Culture and Lit Hub, who will report on ongoing efforts by the Bay Area literary community to protest the shrinking of book pages and the loss of San Francisco Chronicle book editor John McMurtrie, annnounced on February 27th. (McMurtrie tweeted:"Personal news: I got laid off. Seems that rumor about newspapers not making billions in profits might be true. The bright side? More time for reading. Here’s a toast to all readers — this bottle I just found on a giveaway table says, 'The next chapter is always the best.'")

NBCC board member Lori Feathers, a Lit Hub columnist, fiction judge for the Best Translated Book Award, and a co-owner and the book buyer at Interabang Books in Dallas, and Mark Lamster, architecture critic of the Dallas Morning News and an NBCC finalist this year for his biography of Philip Johnson, The Man in the Glass House, will discuss the loss of Dallas Morning News book editor Mike Merschel and 42 two other staff members laid off on January 7 ("The bottom fell out of the journalism business in about 2006, which means I've spent 12 years expecting to be cut in the inevitable next round," Merschel posted on Facebook. "Today, I was finally right.")
